F90 BMW M5 to be launched in Malaysia tomorrow
In BMW, Cars, Local News / By Jonathan Lee / 17 May 2018 11:45 am / 7 comments

The new F90 BMW M5 will be launched in Malaysia tomorrow, May 18, according to a teaser by BMW Malaysia. The high-performance sedan was unveiled to the world in August last year, and we also published our review of it late last year, so its arrival has taken some time.

It’ll probably be worth the wait, however, especially as it has a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 punching out 600 hp from 5,600 to 6,700 rpm and a towering 750 Nm between 1,800 and 5,600 rpm. All that power is sent through an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox to an M xDrive all-wheel drive system – both are firsts for a non-SUV M car. Zero to 100 km/h is done and dusted in just 3.4 seconds.

The AWD system has a default 4WD mode and a more rear-biased 4WD Sport mode, and there’s also a rear-wheel drive mode available with the stability control turned off, allowing you to pull big drifts. Other nuggets of information include a new M Servotronic electromechanical power steering system, Variable Damper Control and a rear locking Active M Differential as standard fitment.

A leaked spec sheet provided details of the standard and optional features of the M5, which is estimated to be priced at a cool RM1 million. That price will include adaptive LED headlights, 20-inch two-tone Style 705 M alloy wheels, gloss black Shadow Line exterior trim, M Compound brakes, a carbon fibre roof, extended Merino leather upholstery, aluminium “carbon structure” interior trim and anthracite headlining.

Also offered are the touchscreen BMW Display Key, keyless entry, push-button start, four-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, power-adjustable M multifunctional seats with upper backrest, bolster and thigh rest adjustment and driver’s side memory, a powered rear windscreen sunblind, 11-colour ambient lighting, a head-up display, Parking Assistant and a hands-free powered bootlid.

The Professional navigation system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen comes as standard; there’s also Gesture Control, a 16-speaker, 600-watt Harmon Kardon sound system and a reverse camera. Safety features include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Approach Control Warning and Person Warning plus Crossing Traffic Warning and Collision Warning at the rear, as part of the Driving Assistant package.

For the first time, BMW Malaysia is also offering option packages for the M5, each adding a huge chunk to the price. The RM30,000 Performance Package includes an M carbon fibre engine cover, M coloured seat belts and an M sports exhaust, while the RM15,000 Advanced Safety Package adds the semi-autonomous Driving Assistant Plus that incorporates Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Lane Change Assistant.

Specifying the RM55,000 Premium Entertainment Package nets you the 1,400-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System as well as Professional rear seat entertainment system. Lastly, a special order for M carbon ceramic brakes will cost you a whopping RM95,000. Add them all together and the price rises to just under RM1.2 million, which is still around 30% cheaper than what a base M5 costs in Thailand.

No word on the brand new BMW M5 Competition, as yet.

But of course the insane taxes will make it unaffordable. In many countries, the M5 is an attainable car – meaning that many people cannot afford it atm, but possibly can in the future. In Malaysia – good luck with that price. Hopefully the government cuts back on car prices! We don’t want another national car!!
